He helped players avoid off-the-field issues which allowed them to keep their focus on football. He also prepared Lambeau Field for visiting dignitaries like President Bush.

Diagnosed with colon cancer, Parins endured chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. He battled cancer to a standstill and encourages his readers to overcome their fears of life-saving medical screenings.

Transcript - Aaron Rodgers Conference Call With Vikings Media
Packers Story: After the (Favre) trade this summer did it ever feel like it got back to a normal training camp the rest of the summer?
It was definitely a training camp filled with a lot of emotions and a lot of different people involved in that. We tried to stay focused as a team on the things that we could control and the guys that were at practice and let the organization and Brett handle the other situation. Once that worked itself out we wished Brett nothing but the best in New York and we are focused on what we have to do to improve this year.

What are your nerves like this week?
I look at it as another game although, obviously, it's my first start and Monday Night Football and all that. But, my preparation hasn't changed. I'm just trying to get ready to be the best quarterback I can be and make good decisions on Monday night.

How are you able to make it just another game considering everything that has happened?
It is ju..

Transcript - Mike McCarthy Conference Call With Vikings Media
Packers Story: After the (Brett Favre) trade this summer, did you feel that in the days following and the weeks following that things more or less got back to normal for you guys? Was it possible to have a normal end of training camp there?
I would say yes. I think any time you get into a training camp environment, or even if it was in-season, and you're on a schedule that demands a lot of your time and you have to take time away from that to do something else, it definitely knocks you out of your regularity and knocks you out of your rhythm. It was definitely good to get back to a normal training camp environment.

If you look at (training camp) as a whole, was it a productive month or six weeks for you guys? Was there more that you wanted to get done?
It was a productive training camp. We knew going into training camp that our schedule was just a little different than we've gone through before. Just the way the games and the practices were outlined. We..

Packers Story: (Are you encouraged by where A.J. Hawk is at and has he hit his marks medically?)
I thought he looked good just from watching him on the field today. I have not watched the film yet, but he looked like his normal self. He was flying around at practice and he is a very physical player, so it was good to have him back out there.

(Is his danger more with contact or just reaching and movement that could aggravate the injury?)
It is like a number of these injuries that are sprains. Any time that a player is injured, you have a medical report where they may feel there is a certain period of time that the player has to go through. Then you have the individual, and we knew that A.J. was going to rehab at a rapid pace, and in his mind he feels he has been ready for quite some time. So it is a combination of the individual and it is a combination of the doctor's report. As far the movement and so forth, I think he is really past all of those stage..

Annual 'Coats For Kids' Campaign Set For Monday
Packers Story: The annual 'Coats for Kids' collection will take place Monday, Sept. 8, at Lambeau Field. Fans attending the game will have the opportunity to donate new and gently used coats for distribution to needy children through area Salvation Army units.

Cash donations will be accepted as well.

The Salvation Army will be collecting coats at the corner of Lombardi Avenue and Oneida Street beginning at 5 a.m. Monday. Later, at 1:45 p.m., the Salvation Army also will be stationed at each entry gate to Lambeau Field to accept coat and cash donations.

The Salvation Army and several area cleaners - Lindeman's Cleaning, Royal Cleaners and Martinizing Dry Cleaning Service - are again leading the seasonal effort to collect coats. Coats can be dropped off at the participating cleaners, in addition to being brought to Monday's game.

Collections at the game will cease at kickoff and the number of coats collected will be announced during the second half of the game.

Packers-Vikings Week 1 Dope Sheet
Packers Story: Two years after he co-founded the Packers with Curly Lambeau, George Calhoun began writing a piece called The Dope Sheet, which served as the official press release and game program from 1921-24.

Honoring Calhoun, the first publicity director, the Packers are running this weekly feature as their release, which is being made available to fans exclusively on Packers.com.

A complete edition of the Dope Sheet will be available each week during the season in PDF format, located in the Packers.com Game Centers.

Here are some highlights from the Packers-Vikings Week 1 Dope Sheet:

Packers Story: (Given the time that Ryan Grant missed in training camp, how confident are you that the running game can hit the ground running?)
He is a big part of it, Ryan Grant, so I just focus on trying to get him ready. He hasn't had a lot of work. That's a legitimate concern. He didn't practice today. He just had some soreness and we were just being cautious with him. Brandon Jackson and Kregg Lumpkin, they are on our football team for a reason and will also contribute to the run game.

(With the shuffling on the offensive line, does the run game as a whole concern you?)
It's a big part of any offense. It's a concern with the whole offensive scheme and what you are trying to do, but we've trained for this particular situation. I didn't think we would be experiencing it in Week 1, but that's part of the game. I'm not really concerned about it. I'm just planning and working through it.

(So it was just soreness and not a setback with R..

Packers Story: (Did Flynn win the No. 2 job?)
Matt Flynn is going to take the No. 2 quarterback reps right now. I talked to both Brian and Matt this morning, and number one, I'm pleased with the progress they've both made throughout training camp, but now's the time when your reps are limited. The ability to keep splitting them, we didn't feel was in the best interests ... it would have been in the best interests of the group, but I wanted to be sure we gave one of the individuals an opportunity to get ready. We just felt Matt was a little more productive than Brian in the preseason, but it's a competition that will continue. Matt has to hold the spot, and Brian will have an opportunity to get the spot back. Competition is healthy. They're both young. I've said it all along, they just need to play, they need reps.

(What do you like about him, if he had to go in early?)
I think Matt, number one, has picked up our offense at a very good pace, better than..

Ted Thompson Press Conference Transcript - Sept. 1
Packers Story: (Why the change at punter?)
Like at any position, I think at the end of the day we felt like it helps the team get better. Jon is a great guy. He has done a good job here. I think consistency might have been the overriding factor. It's tough. Both of those guys today did a nice job.

(Was hang time the biggest issue?)
I don't know. I think Jon has really improved. He's obviously a very talented, very strong athlete. He can hit punts like nobody I have ever seen. Again, I just think overall technique and get-off and the whole mechanics of punting, I think he has come a long way. Again, I think that's something he probably still needs to work on.

(What was so attractive about Derrick Frost?)
We do like his consistency. He has got very good mechanics, nice hands, a good athlete and we think he is a pretty solid punter.'

(What did you think about his second half last year, including the playoffs? Wer..

Packers Announce Additional Roster Moves
Packers Story: The Green Bay Packers have signed punter Derrick Frost and long snapper Brett Goode and released punter Jon Ryan and linebacker Abdul Hodge. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the transactions Monday.

Frost, a fifth-year pro from Northern Iowa, spent the past three seasons with the Washington Redskins (2005-07) after beginning his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns (2004).

-

Goode originally signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a non-drafted free agent in April 2007 and participated in training camp before being released. He re-signed with the Jaguars in March 2008 before his release in June.

Ted Thompson Press Conference Transcript - Aug. 31
Packers Story: Good afternoon. Thanks for coming. I'll start this by saying like I always say this is the toughest couple of days in football. You spend all your offseason assembling a group of fellas, and then at some point you're mandated to release a bunch of them. So it's a tough time for everybody, and we're trying to work our way through it. I'll be glad to take any questions.

(Did you put a claim in on Thomas Gafford?)
We didn't put any claims in this year.

(What do you plan to do at long snapper?)
We're working on it. We don't have anything to announce yet.

(No one on roster you would be confident going into a game with?)
Probably not. We'll probably do something. Like I said, we're working on it.

(Would you consider one of the veteran quarterbacks available or are you confident with the three you have?)
I think it goes with any position, we consider a lot of different combination..

Packers Sign Eight To Practice Squad
Packers Story: The Green Bay Packers signed eight players to the practice squad Sunday. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the signings.

Signed to the practice squad were wide receiver Jake Allen, center Brennen Carvalho, tight end Joey Haynos, linebacker Danny Lansanah, defensive tackle Alfred Malone, cornerback Joe Porter, wide receiver Brett Swain and running back DeShawn Wynn.

Packers Release 19 Players, Place Three On Injured Reserve
Packers Story: The Green Bay Packers released 19 players and placed three on injured reserve. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the transactions Saturday.

Released Saturday were wide receiver Jake Allen, cornerback Scorpio Babers, defensive tackle Conrad Bolston, center Brennen Carvalho, safety Tyrone Culver, linebacker Spencer Havner, tight end Joey Haynos, running back Noah Herron, guard Ryan Keenan, linebacker Danny Lansanah, defensive tackle Alfred Malone, running back Vernand Morency, defensive tackle Daniel Muir, cornerback Joe Porter, wide receiver Johnny Quinn, wide receiver Taj Smith, wide receiver Brett Swain, tackle Orrin Thompson and fullback Corey White.

Mike McCarthy Post-Game Press Conference Transcript - Aug. 28
Packers Story: (Injury update?)
Junius Coston had a knee injury and did not return. Jansen had a knee and did not return. That's all the information I have right now.

(Why just one series for the starters?)
That was the goal going into it and I didn't think it was going to be one play. I thought about putting them back out there but our number one priority for the first group was to come out of the game healthy. We felt like our body of work to this point was enough information to answer the questions that we have. This game for us was about the evaluation of a number of our younger players, particularly the players that played most of the game.

(Has your pecking order changed after Aaron (Rodgers) tonight? If not, can you assess?)
I think both our young quarterbacks were in some tough spots, particularly early in the game - probably the whole first half. Frankly, I liked the way they went about their business. I thought th..

Notebook: 'KGB' Looks To Provide Boost
Packers Story: After missing the entire preseason as he recovered from offseason knee surgery, defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila will likely make his return to the field on Monday night vs. Minnesota, a team he enjoyed some success against last season.
Gbaja-Biamila finished second on the team with 9 1/2 sacks in 2007, and more than half of those came against the division rival Vikings. At the Metrodome last September, Gbaja-Biamila posted his franchise-best fifth three-sack game of his career, plus a forced fumble and a pass defensed. His final sack of the afternoon put him at 69 on his career, surpassing Reggie White's 68 1/2 to give him the franchise career record.

Gbaja-Biamila followed that performance up in November with two more sacks in Green Bay's 34-0 win over Minnesota at Lambeau Field. Despite the success he enjoyed last year, and his one-on-one matchup changing from Bryant McKinnie to Artis Hicks, 'KGB' said his approach for this game will remain the same.

Pickett's Presence Imperative vs. Peterson
Packers Story: The timing of defensive tackle Ryan Pickett's return to the Packers' lineup couldn't be better, and not just because this week is the regular-season opener.

On Monday night at Lambeau Field, the Packers' run defense will face one of its toughest challenges of the season in Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson, and having Pickett in there to plug the middle will be a key to the defense's overall performance.

"He's a big part of what we do," defensive tackles coach Robert Nunn said of Pickett, who missed all of the preseason with a hamstring injury. "He's a guy that does a good job of not getting washed around in there, can anchor down in the middle.

"He has a lot of pride in not letting people run when he's in there. He plays double teams in there and plays smash-mouth ball about as good as anybody in the league, in my opinion. He makes a big difference. He's hard to move out."

Pickett's 330-plus pounds generally take up two blockers in the trenc..

Jordy Nelson Training Camp Diary - Part VI
Packers Story: Rookie wide receiver Jordy Nelson recently finished up his first training camp in the NFL, and Packers.com checked in with him for the final time to get his thoughts and experiences in this training camp diary.

Nelson was a consensus All-America selection at Kansas State, and was one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award in 2007. He posted school records as a senior with 122 receptions for 1,606 yards after beginning his career with the Wildcats as a walk-on safety.

In the Packers' 23-21 loss vs. Tennessee in the preseason finale last Thursday, Nelson returned two kickoffs for 50 yards, including a 29-yarder.

I thought the last game went well. I got a chance to return a couple of kicks and was assignment sound in everything. I think I went out and did everything I was supposed to do and it made me feel confident after that game going into the season.

The final roster cuts are tough on everyone. It's not just rookies that are getting l..

Rodgers Readies For Opportunity
Packers Story: Aaron Rodgers has waited patiently for his chance to be the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, and that opportunity will finally arrive Monday night when the division rival Minnesota Vikings visit Lambeau Field for the season opener.

"It's exciting, it really is," Rodgers said. "I've been running out of the tunnel for three years, and now I get to be the guy coming out. It's going to be electric Monday night, a great experience, a great challenge for us on offense.

"It's definitely a little surreal. It feels like it has gone by quick, but I know the years individually went by a little slow. It's nice to be able to be the guy now. I have the opportunity to be one of the leaders of this football team and hopefully get things started on the right foot this Monday."

After serving as the backup to Brett Favre for the past three seasons, Rodgers will inherit a starting role that brings plenty of added responsibility and pressure.

"Life's di..

Notebook: Spitz Back At C, Moll At RG
Packers Story: By giving Scott Wells more than two weeks to rest his trunk/lower back injury, the Packers and the veteran center were hoping they'd have the muscle strain licked and prevent it from becoming a nagging, recurring thing.

No such luck.

Wells suffered a setback in practice on Monday and was sidelined once again on Tuesday, putting him right back where he was after initially re-aggravating the injury in the second preseason game at San Francisco on Aug. 16.

That also reverted the Packers' offensive line to the one that started the preseason finale last week against Tennessee, with Jason Spitz moving over to start at center for Wells and Tony Moll taking Spitz's place at right guard.

"We've trained for this particular situation," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "I didn't think we would be experiencing it in Week 1, but that's part of the game. I'm not really concerned about it. I'm just planning and working through it."

McCarthy said Wells is ob..

Sept. 2-6 Parking at Lambeau Field Atrium
Packers Story: During the Logging Congress taking place in the Lambeau Field parking lot on the east side of the stadium, visitors to the Lambeau Field Atrium are asked to use the parking lot on the north end of the stadium. The lot can be accessed off Lombardi Avenue, utilizing the entrance near the Lambeau Field sign.

We appreciate our visitors' patience and apologize for any inconvenience.

Notebook: Flynn Begins Season As No. 2 QB
Packers Story: Head Coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that the competition at backup quarterback will continue on throughout the season, but as of now rookie Matt Flynn will be working as the No. 2 signal-caller as the team prepares for the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings next Monday night.

Flynn, who was selected by the Packers in the seventh round out of LSU, spent the entire offseason and training camp as the No. 3 quarterback behind starter Aaron Rodgers and fellow rookie Brian Brohm.

But Flynn continued to look more impressive as the preseason went on, finishing 27-of-42 for 209 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions as he posted a 100.2 quarterback rating.

He capped off the preseason with a strong showing last Thursday against Tennessee, throwing two touchdown passes, including one to wide receiver Jake Allen as time expired to cap off a 13-play, 85-yard drive and pull the Packers within two points. Wide receiver Johnny Quinn was unable to get both ..

As Roster Finalized, Focus Falls On Special Teams
Packers Story: As he made the final roster cuts over the weekend, General Manager Ted Thompson still needed to shore up the long-snapping position on special teams.

He not only did that Monday, he made two other moves that showed how heavily special teams weighed on his mind at cutdown time.

Thompson signed veteran punter Derrick Frost, released over the weekend by Washington, to replace Jon Ryan. And then he spared special teams standout Tracy White by releasing fellow backup linebacker Abdul Hodge from a deep linebacking corps to make room on the roster for Brett Goode, the team's new long snapper.

So while the Packers will enter Week 1 of the 2008 season with a new snapper, punter and holder on field goals (Frost replaces Ryan there, too), they'll maintain some continuity on their coverage units with White, whose 33 special teams tackles over the past two seasons is tied for the top mark on the team with Jason Hunter.

"There is change, but there is always a li..

Roster Close, But Not Quite Set
Packers Story: The 53-man roster for the season opener isn't quite set yet, but General Manager Ted Thompson addressed the roster as it stood on Sunday to a group of reporters in Lambeau Field's media auditorium.

The long and short of it is the Packers have a somewhat surprise inclusion at running back, a void for the moment at long snapper, and a bevy of talented linebackers representing probably the deepest position on the team.

Here's a quick look at those three segments:

Running back
Rookie Kregg Lumpkin, a non-drafted free agent out of Georgia, beat out not one but two veterans - Vernand Morency and Noah Herron - for the No. 3 halfback job.

Lumpkin got ample opportunity to show his skills during the preseason, leading the team with 38 carries for 153 yards (4.0 avg) and a rushing touchdown in the four games. He added seven receptions for 59 yards and another score, showing the coaching and personnel staffs his multi-faceted future potential.
..

Notebook: Linebackers Shine With Spots On The Line
Packers Story: However many linebackers the Packers ultimately decide to keep on their final roster, backups Desmond Bishop, Abdul Hodge and Tracy White didn't make the team's decision any easier as all three wrapped up the preseason with strong performances on Thursday night vs. Tennessee.

The trio finished as the top three tacklers against the Titans, as Hodge and White tied for the lead with nine stops each and Bishop finished third with seven tackles.

"They've got a tough decision upstairs," said Hodge, who has been backing up Nick Barnett at middle linebacker. "I know we are probably going to keep six, but I'm not sure. All I know is that I played my butt off, I practiced my butt off, and I put my best foot forward. Whatever happens, I'll live with it."

In 2007, the Packers carried just five linebackers, with Barnett, A.J. Hawk, Brady Poppinga starting and Bishop and White backing them up. Hodge was on injured reserve.

With offseason free agent signee Brando..

Game Review: Preseason Ends With Wild Finish
Packers Story: It was a quick night for the starters, and a dramatic one for the backups.

The Packers' No. 1 offense scored on its only snap for an early lead Thursday, and then watched the reserves rally with a touchdown on the game's final play, only to come up short when the 2-point conversion failed in a 23-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans that wrapped up the 2008 preseason in front of 69,744 fans at Lambeau Field.

Much of the night was focused on backup quarterbacks Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn, who had their struggles against Tennessee's No. 1 defense in the first half. But, trailing 23-15 in the fourth quarter, both quarterbacks put the Packers (1-3) in position for the tying score.

"I think both our young quarterbacks were in some tough spots," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "They kept battling. They did some good things. It takes time to develop young quarterbacks and that's where we are. I'm excited about their future, but we've got work to do."

With the h..

AP Game Summary: Titans Hold Off Packers 23-21
Packers Story: GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers needed only one play to show that he's ready to go. But Vince Young still doesn't quite seem warmed up for the regular season, even after the Tennessee Titans' 23-21 victory over Green Bay in Thursday's preseason finale at Lambeau Field.

Rodgers threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings on his first -- and only -- play from scrimmage, then spent the rest of the evening holding a clipboard and playing catch on the sideline.

"We're definitely ready," Rodgers said. "We had a good performance last week. One-and-done this week."

Young made a few big plays but failed to capitalize on several scoring chances despite playing with good field position against the Packers' defensive reserves.

Young drove the Titans inside the Packers' 10-yard line four times in the first half, but Tennessee came away with only three field goals. Young led the Titans' No. 1 offense to only two field goals in Tenne..

No. 1 Offense Strikes On First Play, Packers Trail Titans 16-7 At Half
Packers Story: Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the offensive starters knew coming into Thursday night's preseason finale against Tennessee that they would get very limited action, but even they had to be surprised with how brief a night it was.

Rodgers connected with wide receiver Greg Jennings on the first play of the game for a 68-yard touchdown. The play-action pass from Rodgers went just over the fingertips of Titans CB Nick Harper and free safety Michael Griffin overran Jennings, leaving him with an easy path to jog the rest of the way down the sideline for the score.

"Aaron threw a perfect ball in the hole, and the safety came down for the interception instead of playing the ball, and it worked out in our favor," Jennings said.

The offense's night concluded with the one-play scoring drive. Running back Ryan Grant, who missed the first three preseason games with a hamstring injury, started but his duties were limited to the fake on the play-action.

"I was happ..

Jordy Nelson Training Camp Diary - Part V
Packers Story: Rookie wide receiver Jordy Nelson is going through his first training camp in the NFL, and Packers.com will check in with him periodically the next few weeks to get his thoughts and experiences in this training camp diary.

Nelson was a consensus All-America selection at Kansas State, and was one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award in 2007. He posted school records as a senior with 122 receptions for 1,606 yards after beginning his career with the Wildcats as a walk-on safety.

In the Packers' 27-24 win at Denver last Friday, Nelson caught one pass and returned a kickoff 24 yards.

I feel like training camp went well. It was like I expected it would be. I expected it to be hard coming into it and it was difficult. It was the way an NFL camp obviously should be, and it was great to get in here and experience the first one.

It is time consuming and hard both mentally and physically, so you've just got to take care of your body and be pr..

Training Camp Report: Schedule Made For A Different Camp In '08
Packers Story: The Green Bay Packers had fewer training camp practices this summer than they normally do, and that schedule had both its advantages and disadvantages over the past month.

On the plus side, Head Coach Mike McCarthy said the tempo and energy of training camp was improved over his first two seasons, and having fewer workouts played into that.

"I felt our football players were out here working to improve. They weren't out here trying to survive," McCarthy said Tuesday following the last official training camp practice. "They were thriving individually, and I think that's important and I think the schedule helped them."

On the minus side, McCarthy felt the schedule was disjointed, mostly because the Packers' first preseason game was slated for Monday Night Football on Aug. 11. That forced the team to have its first practice on July 28, a bit later than usual, and led to all four preseason games being played in 18 days, without a full week in between any of the ..

Lumpkin Looking To Impress In Finale
Packers Story: Thursday night's preseason finale against Tennessee will likely include only a series or two of action for the Packers' starters, which will provide for plenty of meaningful playing time for the remainder of the roster. Despite facing an uphill battle in a talented backfield, rookie running back Kregg Lumpkin will be one of those players hoping to make an impression on the coaches in the last opportunity before Saturday's final roster cutdown.

Lumpkin, who signed with the Packers in May as a non-drafted free agent out of Georgia, has led the team in rushing this preseason with 28 carries for 126 yards and a touchdown, and has added three receptions for 26 yards and a score.

"I think Lumpkin has had a steady climb," Head Coach Mike McCarthy said. "I just go from the first day with pads and how he did in the blitz drills and things like that. Then the Family Night scrimmage, he had some opportunities, he did some good things, but then didn't take advantage of some opp..

Remembering Gene Upshaw
Packers Story: WASHINGTON, D.C. -- His big, booming voice was a familiar presence in the long halls of the NFL Players Association offices. Even when you couldn't see him, you could hear him coming. Perhaps intimidating if judged solely by his 6-foot-5 frame, for those who knew him, he was far from that.

When he approached your office or cubicle, en route to getting his morning cup of coffee, he was just as likely to discuss life's trivial matters as he was to discuss official work business. Despite his large stature in the world of sports, the man was as personable and approachable as they come.

Gene Upshaw, one of the most influential men in the history of the NFL, a visionary leader and the longtime Executive Director of the NFL Players Association, passed away Wednesday night. He was 63.

A powerful figure in American professional sports and an extremely successful head of the players union, Upshaw passed away at his home in Lake Tahoe, Calif. with his wife, Terri, and..

Roster Spots On The Line Thursday
Packers Story: With one preseason game left and the starters expected to play only a series or two, the focus of Thursday night's contest against Tennessee will be the battles for the last handful of spots on the 53-man roster.

Final cuts must be made by Saturday afternoon, and perhaps this year more than any other in the Ted Thompson-Mike McCarthy era, the Packers will be forced to let go some quality football players who may end up on other teams' rosters before too long.

Here's a quick look at the positions where many of the final roster decisions are unsettled heading into Thursday's game:

Linebacker
Beyond the top four of Nick Barnett, A.J. Hawk, Brady Poppinga and Brandon Chillar, the Packers have three other linebackers - Desmond Bishop, Abdul Hodge and Tracy White - who have proven they're NFL-caliber players.

But how many linebackers the Packers will keep is the key question. Keeping all seven would be a significant departure from the norm, bu..

Training Camp Report: Jones, Sitton Taking Positive Approach With Injuries
Packers Story: Rookie guard Josh Sitton and wide receiver James Jones will both be out this week with the knee injuries they sustained Friday night in Denver, but will be two of several players focused on getting back on the field for the season opener vs. Minnesota.
Sitton, who started the first three preseason games at the right guard spot, is listed as "week-to-week" with the knee sprain, but said he is feeling better each day.

"If you let yourself get frustrated by something like this, it's just going to affect you when you get back," Sitton said. "I've got to look at the positives. It could have been worse and I'm going to be back this season. I'm just kind of going day to day with it and trying to get better."

Sitton, who entered training camp as a backup at guard, impressed the coaches early on and was given the opportunity to earn the starting right guard position once injuries began to cause some shuffling along the line.

"I'm pleased with my performance and..

Packers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The formal launch of the Aaron Rodgers era at quarterback for the Packers will be the talk of the airwaves Monday night, when Green Bay kicks off the 2008 season against Minnesota.

Yet, for all of the attention Rodgers will get as he becomes the first Packer other than Brett Favre to start under center since Sept. 27, 1992, the outcome of the juicy lid lifter between fierce NFC North rivals should be decided in the trenches.

For that, the Vikings come in to Lambeau Field with a decided advantage.

Not only will the Packers have to try to keep Adrian Peterson from running wild with a defensive line that left a lot to be desired in the preseason, they will counter with uncertainty at running back and on the offensive line against Minnesota's dominant front...

Will injuries slow down Manning, Brady? (Yahoo! Sports)
The health of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady certainly tops the list of intriguing story lines this year.

Ex-NFL lineman Dick Enderle found dead (AP)
Dick Enderle, an offensive lineman who played eight seasons in the NFL after starring at the University of Minnesota in the 1960s, was found dead in his Manhattan apartment. He was 60. Emergency medical workers pronounced him dead at the scene Thursday. He was found unconscious on the floor next to an exercise machine.

Injured Hawk returns to practice for Packers (AP)
Perhaps there's something about recent linebacker play in Green Bay that only makes fans notice how good they are when they're missing. That certainly was the case two seasons ago, when middle linebacker Nick Barnett's value to the Packers became obvious when he sat out a game at Seattle with a broken hand and the defense suffered in his absence.

Out of a large shadow, Rodgers looks to carve niche (PA SportsTicker)
He has been scrutinized, vilified and been both wildly booed and passionately cheered - and that's just how Aaron Rodgers spent his summer.

A look at the NFL divisions this season, with 2007 record in parentheses: AFC EAST NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (16-0, 18-1 including postseason) Strengths: Quarterback, with reigning NFL MVP Tom Brady; wide receivers Randy Moss and Wes Welker; a solid offensive line coming back from a poor performance in the Super Bowl loss, and a deep defensive line led by Richard Seymour.

Packers C Wells has setback with lower back injury (AP)
Green Bay Packers center Scott Wells had a setback with his injured lower back after returning to practice Monday, putting his availability in doubt for the season opener against Minnesota. Since the end of the Packers' offseason practice program, Wells has been dealing with what has been described as a "trunk" injury involving his lower back muscles, limiting his availability in training camp...

DT Pickett returns to boost Packers run defense (AP)
Ryan Pickett got to skip training camp and the preseason because of a nagging hamstring injury, though the Green Bay Packers didn't exactly allow him to live a country club lifestyle during his recovery. When the big run-stuffing defensive tackle did emerge from the Packers' indoor practice facility to watch his teammates go through drills during camp, his jersey often was soaked through with...

Packers cut punter Ryan (AP)
The Green Bay Packers will start the regular season against the Minnesota Vikings next Monday night with a new punter, a new holder and a new long snapper. General manager Ted Thompson cut punter Jon Ryan on Monday in favor of ex-Washington Redskins punter Derrick Frost and chose Brett Goode to be the team's long snapper.

Favre mess aside, playoffs still in Pack's plans (AP)
Contrary to popular belief across the country, Brett Favre did not go 13-3 and come within an overtime field goal of the Super Bowl last season. The Green Bay Packers did. Favre is gone now, traded to the New York Jets after one of the ugliest splits ever seen between a team and its star player. After shaking off the mother of all training camp distractions, the Packers expect to contend again this...

It might be in a brace, but Vikes QB Jackson says he'll play (Yahoo! Sports)
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson repeated what he has been saying for the past week.

Culpepper says he'd consider backup role with Pack (AP)
If the Green Bay Packers change their mind about having two rookies back up quarterback Aaron Rodgers this season, veteran free agent Daunte Culpepper is willing to listen. "I have not heard from the Packers since before the draft," Culpepper said in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Thursday night.

Titans beat Packers 23-21 in preseason finale (AP)

Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn (10) runs past Tennessee Titans safety Tony Joiner (39) during the second half of an NFL preseason football game Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, in Green Bay, Wis.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers needed only one play to show that he's ready to go. But Vince Young still doesn't quite seem warmed up for the regular season, even after the Tennessee Titans' 23-21 victory over Green Bay in Thursday's preseason finale at Lambeau Field. Rodgers threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings on his first -- and only -- play from scrimmage, then spent the rest of...

Packers have confidence in rookie QBs Brohm, Flynn (AP)
For every pass that's right on the mark, another zings past a receiver's outstretched arms, gets batted down by a defensive lineman or is snatched away by a defensive back. Mistakes are to be expected of any quarterback in his first NFL training camp, and Green Bay Packers rookies Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn are no exception.

Packers cut RB Wynn, send DT Harrell to PUP list (AP)
The Green Bay Packers placed defensive tackle Justin Harrell on the physically unable to perform list Monday and released running back DeShawn Wynn. Green Bay also cut fullback Ryan Powdrell, wide receiver Chris Francies and offensive lineman Ryan Considine to trim its roster to 75 players before Tuesday's NFL-mandated deadline.

Rodgers bounces back in Packers' win over Denver (AP)

Green Bay Packers running back Kregg Lumpkin runs for a touchdown against the Denver Broncos during the second half of a preseason football game in Denver, Friday, Aug. 22, 2008.

Aaron Rodgers went from pathetic one week to just about perfect the next. Brett Favre's replacement as Green Bay's quarterback bounced back from a bad game at San Francisco to complete 18 of 22 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown in the Packers' 27-24 win over Denver on Friday night. Rodgers led four scoring drives in his five possessions and was 16-for-19 for 178 yards against the Broncos'...

Yet, for all of the attention Rodgers will get as he becomes the first Packer other than Brett Favre to start under center since Sept. 27, 1992, the outcome of the juicy lid lifter between fierce NFC North rivals should be decided in the trenches.

Green Bay Packers Notes, Quotes
--Not long after the Packers ushered Brett Favre out of Green Bay by trading the once-retired iconic quarterback to the New York Jets in early August, the rival Minnesota Vikings didn't pull any punches in verbally targeting new starter Aaron Rodgers.

Green Bay Packers Strategy and Personnel
The Packers likely will open the season Monday night with the same offensive line they had on the field at the start of their final preseason game Aug. 28 against Tennessee. Center Scott Wells aggravated a strained muscle in his lower back in practice Monday and, after missing practice Tuesday, is iffy to recover in time for the game. Wells missed all but one preseason game because of the injury. Without Wells in the lineup, Jason Spitz would move from right guard to c= enter.

That certainly was the case two seasons ago, when middle linebacker Nick Barnett's value to the Packers became obvious when he sat out a game at Seattle with a broken hand and the defense suffered in his absence. Teams downplay tampering charge
The players are worried about only the impact of the game on the division race, not the false Favre allegations.

Spotlight on Pack's Rodgers against Vikes Monday
There really was no scenario that would have allowed Aaron Rodgers to quietly ease into his new job as the Green Bay Packers' starting quarterback. But it's hard to imagine a debut being much more intense than Monday night's season opener against Minnesota at Lambeau Field. For starters, most of the league has the night off and will be watching Rodgers' first start that counts.
